Technology and Literacy

Technology has an impact in the way we write and speak. These two texts contrast how technology can create new forms of communication and also preserve old ones. In the article Whimsical Text Icons Get a Chance at Success the author talks about how emoji or emoticons have changed the way people communicate adding “emotion or feeling” to plain text, becoming kind of a pictorial alphabet that is so widespread that people are conveying full texts and even stories with them.

Everyone Speaks Text Message on the other hand, presents how technology is helping save heritage languages by providing tools to preserve and use them in everyday life and also helping oral languages create sound dictionaries and transition to written systems that can be used in computers, cell phones and even in TV subtitles.  I wonder how many languages will see their written forms for the first time in digital instead of printed format.
